Nature photography doesn't always have to be about far-away exotic lands. In fact, the better you know the subject you are attempting to capture, (it's habits, and habitats) the better your odds are of getting that really special shot. Most of the photos on this page came from the fields, parks, and meadows surrounding my home. And the Monarch series was literally taken in my own backyard.

Did you Know . . .

- That a butterfly’s wings are actually transparent. Stacked in rows on top of this transparent membrane are iridescent scales, which overlap like shingles on a roof, give the wings the colors that we see.

- That both butterflies and moths belong to the order Lepidoptera. In Greek, this means scale wing.

-Butterflies and moths are found on every continent in the world except Antarctica.

- That a butterfly’s taste buds (sensors) are located in his feet, and by standing on their food, they can actually taste it!

-That the Queen Alexandra butterfly from Papua and New Guinea are the largest in the World with wingspans of more than 10"

- That butterflies don’t have mouths. Instead the use a long straw like structure called a proboscis which they use to drink nectar and juices. When not in use, the proboscis remains coiled-up like a garden hose.

-- Scientist currently believe butterflies can only see red, green, and yellow.

- The top flight speed for a butterfly is 12 miles per hour. Some moths can fly 25 miles per hour!

- Butterflies cannot fly if their body temperature is less than 86 degree.
